The Department of Chemistry offers courses for undergraduates who plan to major or minor in Chemistry, as well as for students pursuing other degrees within the college. Courses for majors prepare the students for professional work and further study in chemistry and other fields of pure and applied science. Courses for the non-science major are designed to introduce students those essentials of chemical fact and theory which will contribute to the student’s understanding of present-day scientific knowledge. The department is the largest chemistry department in CUNY in terms of student enrollment, and routinely ranks in the top 40 in the United States in graduating chemistry majors. The Hunter College Chemistry community has access to state-of-the-art research facilities such as Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Mass Spectrometry, high resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy, X-ray, and Scanning Probe Microscopes. Major I provides students with intensive training for professional research and graduate study and is accredited by the American Chemical Society. Major II consists of three options: Option 1( Chemistry) for students interested in the chemical industry; Option 2 ( Biochemistry) for students interested in the pharmaceutical industry (accredited by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology), medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine or physical therapy; Option 3 (Bioinformatics) for students interested in graduate studies in biochemistry and bioinformatics as well as pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. Options 1-3 are all appropriate for students pursuing teacher education programs.
What can I do with my degree in Chemistry?
The department provides training for students planning careers in the chemical sciences, biology, medicine, earth sciences, secondary education, business, and law across the chemical enterprise in academia, industry, government, and private practice.
